Accepting the truth – I think my body hates me

perth pilates class run

12/8/15, by Jess Davies

The more time I spend with Jeremy at Wisdom Physiotherapy, the more I realise how little I have looked after my body over the past few years. I am the kind of person who doesn’t like to stop and rest – I don’t believe in colds, I never get massages and my personal training motto is “Push through the pain.” I am quickly gathering from the raised eyebrow looks I keep receiving from Jeremy when I tell him that I haven’t had a rest day from running that he thinks I need to change my ways. And I think he may have a point.

I am the kind of person who doesn’t like to stop and rest – I don’t believe in colds, I never get massages and my personal training motto is “Push through the pain.”

My body took awhile to respond in my private session on Wednesday, plus I had a case of Raynaud’s disease in my right hand and then cramp in my right foot. Luckily Elle and Jeremy were there to look after me and provided me with warming heatphysio perth running pack for my hand (it smelt nice, too!) and general sympathy as I tried not to yell too loudly about my spasming foot .

I am becoming more accustomed to the exercises Jeremy keeps asking me do and I am starting to understand far more about my body and the purpose behind each movement. I am no longer nervous about the contraptions I have to lie, kneel and stand on, and I am very much enjoying the physical and mental release many of the exercises give me.

My body is already responding to the exercises that Jeremy has prescribed for me and running has started to become easier and less painful. I am really enjoying the mix of my morning runs with the more relaxing, yet still physically challenging, pilates sessions. Since my long run on the weekend, I have been quite stiff and sore in my hamstrings and shoulders, but since the group class and my private session with Jeremy this week, my muscles have recovered surprisingly quickly. The Pilates is definitely helping.
